Overview
Chess Mates offers chess classes for kids ages 3 and up.
Our chess classes run in many schools in Brisbane, Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast, Melbourne and Adelaide. Alternatively, your child can join us for Online Classes, or Private Lessons. We also run Chess Tournaments and Holiday Programs
Unlike many chess programs, we make chess fun. Chess Mates parents regularly exclaim over how engaged their kids are and how they love playing chess at home!

At Chess Mates, our chess classes for kids focus on fun, enjoyment, and cooperation, not performance and competition.
Our attentive teachers will help your child learn and build upon the fundamentals of chess, while also using chess as a vehicle for teaching math skills, social skills, and emotional intelligence in an interactive and cooperative environment.

It’s been shown that learning to play chess from age 3 can improve a child’s overall performance at school by nearly 20% compared to children who have not learnt chess. In other words, learning chess helps your child to leap ahead of their peers at school.

How We Teach Chess to Kids
- At Chess Mates, we teach chess classes for kids aged 3 and up in South-east Queensland, Melbourne and Adelaide.
- Your child is taught in a fun and engaging environment, with creative storytelling, chess puzzles, and games of chess. We also teach planning skills as they learn to think one step ahead!
- Chess Mates chess classes are about learning, not just facilitating games of chess. Nor do we focus on winning. Instead, we teach about winning and losing in a supportive environment, so your child can learn to deal with both situations emotionally. We focus on how chess can be fun and help your child make new friends.
- Chess Mates chess classes are taught in childcare centres, at schools, and privately. We also offer one-on-one chess classes in your home. That way, there’s always an option to suit you and your child.
- All our teachers have current Blue Cards for working with children. In schools, we have a maximum 18 students per teacher, so your child receives the individual attention they deserve, while also learning and practising social skills, and making new friends.
- School classes are 30 to 60 minutes in length. At the end of each term, you receive feedback on your child’s progress and learning.

School Classes
Each chess class begins with an interactive lesson exploring one key idea, chess piece, or strategy. Working with their peers, your child will play games and puzzles to put this lesson into practice, receiving personal feedback from their teacher along the way.
Holiday Programs
Keep the kids busy these holidays with our fun holiday chess program. They’ll have fun playing giant chess, learning new strategies, and then practice their new skills in our afternoon mini tournament. Suitable for Preps – Grade 6
Tournaments
Chess Mates students have the opportunity to compete against fellow Chess Mates competitors. Competitions run for the whole day gaining valuable competiton-style chess experience. Suitable for Preps - Grade 6 in either the Novice or Advanced Divisions
Online & Private Classes
Whether your child is a complete beginner or a budding champ, your chess teacher will tailor lessons to suit your child’s age, experience, abilities, and learning style. If you have more than one kid who wants to learn, we’re happy to teach them both!
